At the Institute of Translation and Interpretating of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), we are organising a series of monthly webinars in English on the most innovative developments in the language industry.

The idea came from the industry itself. In October 2023, the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) organised a meeting with representatives of leading Swiss language service providers and language departments at large companies. They all expressed the need to be kept informed about technological developments and industry trends in a short, compact format, for example as part of presentations held at lunchtime.

For the 2024 edition, which started on 7 June, we are offering seminars that address the new skills needed in these times of change, including consulting skills, translation for social media, and the handling of unusual file formats. At the same time, the seminars will introduce new technological applications, such as augmented reality for interpreters, translation management systems, and the use of artificial intelligence in the field of terminology.

For the 2025 edition, we have other interesting topics in the pipeline, including future trends in machine translation, speech-to-text interpreting, multilingual text production with artificial intelligence, and computer-assisted interpretating, amongst others.

The webinars are offered in a compact format, meaning that in addition to acquiring skills and expertise, they can help define the abilities professionals need to develop their careers and remain competitive in the language industry. The seminar series also provides a channel for networking with an online community of experts, with time being made available to ask questions and exchange views following the 30 minutes of learning.

Participants can expect specific and forward-looking input on innovative solutions in the language industry, both from a research and a practical perspective. This means that they will have access to a high-quality offering and up-to-date information that can help them stay ahead, anticipate change, and be better prepared for the future.
