The Colegio Mexicano de Intérpretes de Conferencias (CMIC) has launched a new online repository devoted to preserving and making contributions of professional and historical relevance available to the interpreting community.

The initiative reflects CMIC’s commitment not only to supporting practising interpreters, but also to preserving the knowledge, experience and history that have shaped the profession. Through the repository, CMIC seeks to provide a lasting home for selected articles and contributions that document developments in conference interpreting and explore issues of significance to the profession.

The repository was inaugurated with an article by Dr Lucila Christen entitled La génesis de la interpretación simultánea (The Genesis of Simultaneous Interpreting). The article looks at the origins and development of simultaneous interpreting, offering readers an opportunity to revisit an important chapter in the history of a profession that has evolved considerably over the decades.

Choosing a historical contribution for the repository’s first publication also reflects one of the aims behind the initiative: looking towards the future of interpreting while recognising the people, developments and professional experience on which that future is built.

Contributions to the repository are not limited to CMIC members. Authors interested in contributing are invited to consult the submission guidelines available on the repository page. CMIC reviews and approves contributions that meet the established criteria before publication.

At a time when the interpreting profession is undergoing rapid technological and professional change, preserving its collective knowledge is particularly important. Professional associations have a role to play not only in representing their members today, but also in ensuring that valuable knowledge and experience remain accessible to future generations of interpreters.

With this new repository, CMIC hopes to support those efforts by creating a resource that brings together valuable perspectives from within and beyond its membership and which continues to grow alongside the profession.
