Argentina’s Colegio de Traductores de la Provincia de Santa Fe, first division (CTPSFPC) is seeking to permanently strengthen its ties with the educational institutions that train our translators and interpreters, believing that such ties provide many advantages. It is essential that students understand what a professional association can do for them when they graduate; in turn, professional associations need to know what these future professionals feel, think, and need.
For this reason, the CTPSF took part in a roundtable discussion between professional associations at the V International Workshop on Training and Research in Languages and Translation, which was held in Buenos Aires between 28 and 30 August 2024. The event’s tagline was ‘Towards new paradigms: refreshing perspectives on translation and language teaching’, and it had about 500 registered participants. It was hosted by the Instituto de Enseñanza Superior en Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández (IESLV JRF).
International events like this one help raise awareness of the CTPSF beyond the borders of our province and country and allow us to join the group of associations that help regulate and enhance our profession on a global level.
The CTPSFPC was also invited to take part in the discussion on ‘Thinking and (re)thinking how law and legal translation are taught at universities’ at the I International Workshop on Languages/Cultures in University Education Settings, held in La Plata (Buenos Aires province) between 3 and 5 October. This event involved national and international speakers and researchers and was organised by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the School of Languages, Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences, Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP).
Our president, sworn translator Silvia Bacco, gave a talk entitled ‘Factors influencing the design of a sworn translation curriculum’, based on the CTPSFPC’s involvement in designing the curriculum for the Supplemental Course for Sworn Translators at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral.
These events have given the CTPSF the opportunity to learn about the teaching and research activities in the field of linguistics taking place at various universities within and outside of Argentina. These exchanges clearly have a positive impact on translators’ associations, which need to act in concert with the organisations that provide academic training for their members.
