The Asociación Mexicana de Traductores Literarios (AMETLI) is constantly looking for new ways to bring benefits to both its membership and emerging literary translators.
For several years, we have offered graduating students the opportunity to complete the social service required to obtain their degree in collaboration with one of our members. This year, for example, thanks to the contributions of a student who took part as both participant and reviewer, Barbara Bertoni enriched the translation experience of the participants in Laboratorio Trādūxit, an Italian–Spanish literary translation workshop she runs. The workshop encourages both professionals and people with no previous connection to the translation industry to work on a text from start to finish until it is ready for publication. The student helped organise the M’illumino/d’immenso poetry translation prize, developing skills in writing press releases and networking with colleagues in the field, thus preparing for joining the professional world. The experience and relationships created through participation in this type of service are essential for comprehensive translation training.
Furthermore, AMETLI continues to strengthen its presence at major international events, such as the Guadalajara Book Fair, the most prominent event for the Spanish-language publishing world, which we participated in during the first week of December 2025 for the third consecutive year with our own programme: the AMETLI Translation Conference. In doing so, we put our members, translation, and literary translators on the map, and we remind those involved in book publishing how important professional translation is in bringing the books we enjoy to light.
These actions allow us to deepen and nourish the roots of our profession, hoping that it will withstand the winds – sometimes gales – of change, be they favourable or not, and nevertheless producing blossoms that continue to colour the landscape of human cultural experience in our language.
