FIT LatAm and RITerm Collaboration
In December, FIT LatAm organised a joint webinar with RITerm, the Ibero-American Terminology Network, on ‘Terminology, corpus, and translators training in the context of AI: new tools and technologies’ with prestigious speakers and a very engaged audience from different parts of the world.
FIT LatAm Presidents’ Meeting
The third FIT LatAm Presidents’ Meeting was held on 30 November 2024 to recap the year’s activities and plan next steps. Alison Rodriguez and Geoff Westgate (WIPO) delivered a presentation of the upcoming FIT Congress. International speaker Cecilia Lipovsek offered a professional development seminar on value-added institutional communications for the leadership teams of our associations. 
III LatAm Regional Forum
FIT LatAm organised its III Regional Forum, ‘Diversity, integration, and quality: the foundations of translation and interpreting in Latin America’, exclusive for members of FIT associations on 22 March. Matthew Perret shared insights about human quality in simultaneous interpreting, emotional intelligence and communicative intonation; Séverine Hubscher-Davidson emphasised the importance of integrating human skills into the language professions; Verónica Pérez-Guarnieri gave an overview of ISO standards for T&I, and Fréderic Chaume addressed audiovisual translation, the technology landscape, and opportunities for developing new professional roles.
FIT LatAm Webinar Series
Continuing with our training series, in our recent webinar ‘Technology to take you forward’, speaker John Di Rico shared tips on new technology tools that help translators make their day-to-day organisational tasks more effective.
FIT LatAm–WASLI LAC Regional Seminar
Recognising the power of collaborations and partnerships to strengthen the profession in Latin America and the world, the main topics of this fruitful exchange were the new perspectives, paradigm shifts and challenges that emerge in linguistic and cultural accessibility. Christian Ramírez Valerio, Regional Representative, Deaf Interpreter, and Laura Astrada, Regional Representative, Hearing Interpreter, participated on behalf of WASLI LAC, and Abrahán Pérez Herrada, VP of ACTI, and Mary Ann Monteagudo, Chair of our Regional Centre, were the speakers representing FIT LatAm. The event had International Sign Language, Spanish and English interpretation.
More collaborative events:
FIT NA / FIT LatAm Collaborative Symposium, hosted by the ATA Standards Committee. On 3 June, this roundtable on ‘AI safety in T&I: standards, ethics, and practical implications’, brought together translation and interpreting professionals from around the world to explore the ethical, practical, and standardisation challenges posed by the integration of AI.
LatAm Presidents’ Meeting. The leaders of LatAm associations convened at the III International Congress on Translation and Interpretation organised by CTPU, on 20–21 June, in Montevideo, Uruguay, to prepare for the FIT World Congress in Geneva. The programme featured a visibility event: a roundtable of professional association leaders who shared initiatives and opportunities in the region.
Upcoming event:
- FIT LatAm General Meeting. The venue will be Geneva during the FIT Statutory Congress. The current Executive Council will have its final AGM of the 2022–2025 term, and new leaders will be elected.
