The Association of Sworn Translators of Rio de Janeiro (ATP-Rio) has a longstanding tradition of monthly social gatherings, a custom that dates back to the 1970s and remains strong to this day. These meetings offer a relaxed and welcoming environment where members share food, drinks, and camaraderie while staying up to date on news relevant to our profession.
ATP-Rio is highly active and is one of the founding members of Brazil’s Federal Association of Sworn Translators and Interpreters (FENATIP). Our board regularly provides important updates to members and is available to address questions related to regulations, registration procedures, and the specific requirements of sworn translations in Brazil. We maintain regular contact with members via email, instant messaging, and phone.
However, nothing compares to meeting in person. Face-to-face encounters allow for quickly resolving issues, communicating important announcements directly, and – perhaps most importantly – the opportunity to strengthen both professional and personal ties.
Our gatherings take place every second Tuesday of the month. We typically meet for lunch at a seaside restaurant in Copacabana, where we enjoy good food, the ocean breeze, and lively conversation. Occasionally, we switch things up with a happy hour – as we did on 13 May 2025, when we met at our favourite tapas bar in Copacabana. ATP-Rio’s president, Monica Hruby, shared positive news from a recent productive meeting with the new leadership at the Registry of Commerce, the authority responsible for overseeing our professional registrations. While discussing the key outcomes, we enjoyed delicious dishes and raised a toast to our community.
Once a year, in celebration of International Translation Day, we replace our regular meeting with a more festive dinner. In 2024, the event was held at a sophisticated Italian restaurant with excellent food and a lovely atmosphere. We had a private room, which allowed for extended conversations and a more intimate setting. On this occasion, too, the president shared important updates regarding developments in our field.

Whatever the future holds, we are confident that fostering a strong, connected community is the key to moving forward together.
Marise Barros, Vice President, ATP-Rio
