This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Colegio de Traductores Públicos del Uruguay (CTPU), the first association of translators established in Latin America. The association is organising the Third International Congress of Translation and Interpreting in Uruguay, to be held in Montevideo on 20 and 21 June 2025. The event aims to be a space to gather and reflect on the challenges and opportunities currently facing the profession.

The CTPU and its objectives

The CTPU is a non-profit association with voluntary membership that brings together sworn translators in Uruguay. Its objectives include ensuring the free and independent practicing of the profession by its members; adopting measures aimed at improving their legal standing and financial situation; ensuring the development of professional awareness and ethics; and establishing links with legal, literary, and higher education institutions, as well as those that bring together translators, interpreters, qualified professionals, or persons working in linguistics and related fields.

Continuous professional development and networking

Since its inception, the CTPU has been characterised by a strong commitment to the excellence of sworn translators and their training throughout their professional careers. This is reflected, among other things, in the various training courses and workshops on a wide range of practice areas that we offer our members each year.

The most emblematic professional and academic activities of the CTPU in recent years have undoubtedly been its congresses. These have allowed us to delve into the most important academic developments in translation and interpreting in the region and around the world. In addition, they have stood out not only for the high academic quality of their presentations, but also for the opportunities for productive exchange, ideal for professional networking. The First Congress of Translation and Interpreting in Uruguay was held in 2011, with the theme ‘Translation: forging the past, transforming the present, building the future’. In 2017, the Second International Congress of Translation and Interpreting was held with the theme ‘New challenges in times of change’.

Third International Congress of Translation and Interpreting in 2025

The CTPU is currently organising the Third International Congress of Translation and Interpreting in Uruguay, with the theme ‘Tradition and innovation: true to the essence, embracing change’. This activity coincides with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the CTPU, making the congress an invitation to revisit the origins of translation and interpreting in Uruguay with an innovative perspective that reflects the technological and social changes that characterise the 21st century.
