The Association of Sworn Court Interpreters and Legal Translators of Slovenia (SCIT®) is hosting FIT Council in Ljubljana from 24 to 29 March 2025. The meeting, including honorary advisers and observers, will take place at the Grand Plaza Hotel and marks the third and final in-person FIT Council meeting of the 2022–2025 mandate. The visit concludes on 29 March 2025 with the International Forum on Translation and Interpreting 2025, organised by SCIT®.
This is the first time FIT Council has convened in Slovenia, which is represented in FIT by three member associations: SCIT®, DZTPS, and DPTS. The visit aims to raise awareness of FIT and the translation and interpreting profession in Slovenia and the Western Balkans.
Visit of FIT President Alison Rodriguez and press coverage
As part of the preparations, FIT President Alison Rodriguez visited the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana in December 2024. During her two-day working visit, following the FIT Europe Annual General Meeting in Budapest, she met with students and faculty of translation, German, Russian, Spanish, and English studies.
She also visited the Department of Legal, Language, Interpreting, and Translation Studies in Trieste, Italy. During her stay in Slovenia, she was invited for interviews by Delo and Radio Slovenia, which were published and broadcast in December.
In the interviews, she discussed her visit to the Czech Republic, where she met with officials, including representatives of the Czech Government, to examine the risks of AI in court interpreting. She also shared her views on copyright in translation, AI debates, and labelling translations, questioning whether AI developments resemble past Luddite fears and remarking, ‘Many people think technology will do the dirty and tiring work; maybe that will come true, but it does not mean we will all be lying by the pool sipping martinis.’
The interviews are available on the Forum’s website.
International Forum on Translation and Interpreting 2025
The International Forum on Translation and Interpreting 2025 – ‘The Power of Words and the Intelligent Future’ in Ljubljana will be moderated by British journalist Guy De Launey (BBC News, Monocle Magazine, Monocle Radio). He will lead discussions with panellists from Slovenia, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and the US on topics including copyright in translation, audiovisual translation, legal and court interpreting, continuing professional development, the global perspective, the future of the profession in Slovenia, the Labels project, and AI.
Beyond expert discussions, the forum will strengthen connections among translators and interpreters, bridging gaps between academics, students, independent practitioners, and industry stakeholders. It also aims to highlight knowledge traditionally cultivated through formal translation studies while encouraging broader access to such insights. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, the forum seeks to create a more connected and inclusive professional environment, where expertise is shared, best practices are exchanged, and new professional relationships are formed.
