The Association of Interpreters and Translators (AIT) is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to achieving protection of title for interpreters and translators, raising professional standards, and providing essential training, continuing professional development (CPD), networking opportunities, and supervision.

Not only are we proud members of FIT, but we have been elected to serve on the board of one of the largest regional centres, FIT Europe. Our involvement with FIT and FIT Europe reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing and recognising the T&I profession globally. This partnership amplifies our advocacy efforts, forges powerful collaborations with international peers, and affirms our steadfast dedication to upholding the highest professional standards.
Advocating for protection of title and fair standards
One of AIT’s primary missions is securing protection of title for interpreters and translators, ensuring that only qualified professionals can practise in these critical roles. This is essential for maintaining high standards and safeguarding the public. Without protection of title, unqualified individuals may misrepresent themselves as interpreters or translators, leading to serious consequences, especially in legal and medical contexts where accuracy is paramount.
AIT is at the forefront of advocacy, tackling critical industry issues in the UK and beyond. We address concerns such as fair remuneration, improved working conditions, and timely payment for services. The recent House of Lords Public Inquiry into Interpreting and Translation Services for UK Courts highlighted significant problems affecting professionals in our field. AIT is actively pushing for mandatory regulation and fairer practices to ensure interpreters and translators receive the recognition, respect, and professional treatment they deserve.
Pioneering training and supervision initiatives
AIT is leading the way in professional development by offering groundbreaking training programmes. Notably, we have been coordinating joint training with police negotiators, equipping interpreters with the skills needed for high-stakes and sensitive situations, such as crisis intervention. Additionally, we have introduced supervision for professional interpreters and translators, a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting practitioners in their challenging work. Our collaboration with Cleveland Clinic London has also resulted in a dedicated medical interpreting training programme, ensuring that interpreters working in healthcare settings meet the highest standards of competency and ethical practice.
A commitment to raising standards and awareness
Through ongoing training, CPD opportunities, and networking events, AIT is committed to enhancing the quality of interpreting and translation services. We also recognise the increasing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the profession and are engaged in discussions and initiatives to ensure its responsible and ethical use. Building a strong community and promoting best practices ensures that our members are well-equipped to navigate the evolving demands of the profession.
