The world is evolving at an exponential rate, constantly creating new needs for communication within society. Digital transformation, automation, and artificial intelligence are clear responses to this universal need for interaction. However, it is those who translate and interpret professionally, in their roles as linguistic and cultural mediators, who play a leading role in global communication. For those of us working in these roles, it is also our responsibility to increase the visibility of this aspect of our profession.
Against this challenging outlook, where automated solutions have begun to take centre stage, the Third International Congress on Translation and Interpreting is being held with the theme ‘One world, many voices: translators and interpreters in the digital age’. It will emphasise to society the true globalising role of those of us who translate and interpret professionally, highlighting human beings as communicators par excellence. Each of us has something to share from our diverse specialist areas – translation, interpreting, terminology, translation studies, translation teaching, proofreading, transcription, postediting, and linguistic consultation – and from our diverse countries, career paths, and experiences. That is why we chose ‘One world, many voices’.
If we resist accepting advances in science and technology, we run the risk of becoming extinct. Instead, we can use all these innovations as a valuable opportunity to refine our profiles, enhance our skills, and highlight our comparative advantages. In the face of fast, automated results and price pressure, we will underline the subtlety of language and consideration for authors’ styles, and reflect on target cultures, the communicative role of translation, and the specialist knowledge of translators and interpreters. Therefore, this congress will not just concentrate on showing the advances and challenges the digital age presents for translation and interpreting, it will also reflect on and propose ways to update our professional practices in our different areas.
We invite you to participate in the Third International Congress on Translation and Interpreting: ‘One world, many voices: translators and interpreters in the digital age’, jointly organised by the Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazón (UNIFÉ), the Universidad Ricardo Palma (URP), the Universidad César Vallejo (UCV), and the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), taking place on 24 and 25 May 2024 in Lima, Peru.
We are one world, but we have many voices. We want to hear yours! https://CITEI2024.cventevents.com
